I visited so many graves while in Trinidad and Tobago, but this one was one of the saddest places. This was a story of a young woman who died very young during child birth. The place is famous perhaps for the tombstone writings and the tragic destiny of the woman.
I simply love mysteries. This tombstone says “She was a mother without knowing it, and a wife without letting her husband know it; except by her kind indulgences to him”. Mysterious, right?
There are some theories, but non of them proven. Some say she was black slave in a romance with a white slave master, which was taboo back then. Other theory tells she gave birth while unconscious and the child was hidden from her. Whatever happened, it certainly is interesting.
A mysterious place for people who love some spiced up stories. My wife and I visited the tomb and read the short story on the headstone. It was a sad life of a woman who died shortly after she delivered a child. I’m not a fan of visiting tombstones no matter how popular they are, but this was rather serene place to be.
I was told that this grave puzzles generations of Tobagonians and I had to visit. Interesting writing, but nothing special for us tourists.
This is a very special and respected site for the people of Tobago. I visited it, the story is really heartbreaking, but don’t expect anything dramatic. It’s just a tomb of a young woman who died during childbirth.
